The Green Prize for Sustainable Africa was created in 2018 by the Climate Change Africa Opportunities (CCAO) organization in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. Each year, this prize recognizes (through a highly competitive incubation process) 10 to 20 young green entrepreneurs, women, and indigenous peoples who have contributed, through their green startups and initiatives, to improving and strengthening African resilience to climate change.
As part of the Green Prize for a Sustainable Africa, Climate Change Africa Opportunities (CCAO) and its partners annually seek out and identify local approaches, startups, and initiatives from young green entrepreneurs, women, and indigenous communities with knowledge (traditional and/or modern), new ideas, and initiatives offering or likely to offer services, indigenous solutions, and/or innovative technologies in various fields related to climate resilience.
Each winner/startup/initiative of the Green Prize for a Sustainable Africa receives a small grant ranging from USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 (depending on the quality of the project presented), an incubation program, and post-incubation support.
The winners of the 2020 Green Prize for a Sustainable Africa received their awards at an awards ceremony on April 30, 2021, in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The winners of the 2019 Green Prize for Sustainable Africa received their awards at an awards ceremony on October 30, 2019, in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
